Experience our Backyard

Mt Barossa - Hakatere Conservation Park
The Districts back country is it's best kept secret - Mountains, Lakes, endangered birds, vast landscapes, waterfalls and braided rivers. Adventure and active tourism is growing in New Zealand and Mid Canterbury offers plenty of alternatives.

Our back country offers walks for everyone - from family groups who want an easy amble, to those who want a bit more of a challenge.

Hakatere Conservation Park covers nearly 60,000 hectares of rugged mountain country, tussock lands, beech forest and sparkling clear rivers and lakes between two mighty rivers, the Rakaia and Rangitata. The headwaters of the rivers are notable landscapes including the upper Rangitata which featured in Lord of the Rings films (Mt Sunday was a location for Edoras)
