The story of The Plains Vintage Railway and Historical Museum begins nearly 130 years ago, in May 1878. It was in this year that the first section of the branch line railway that would in time become the 'Mt Somers Branch in Mid Canterbury and later, operating on the first approximately 3 kilometres - to the old Frasers Road railway crossing - The Plains Railway was laid.

The Plains Vintage Railway & Historical Museum in Tinwald, Mid Canterbury is home to a wide range of exhibits, spanning the history of Mid-Canterbury since European Colonisation. Our core exhibits are split into three main sections, The Vintage Railway - Featuring three operational steam locomotives and the New Zealand Rail Speed Record holding Vulcan Railcar.
The Pioneer Village - With the old Waterton Anglican Church taking pride of place alongside the former Chertsey Railway Station and our vast Rural History section - Complete with vintage tractors, traction engines and other farm machinery.

HOW TO FIND US
Getting in touch with us is as easy as dropping in for a visit. We are in the Tinwald Domain, on Maronan Road just off State Highway 1 in Tinwald. We have our own set of gates so just look for big sign with an image of Rogers 'K' 88 and a vintage tractor on it as you drive along.
